1963 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-014

Description

Originally cataloged as WDDO-034 before being reassigned to replace the original WDDO-014 listing that was delisted for being too minor, this 1963 Proof Jefferson Nickel doubled die obverse carries a complex catalog history that reflects the evolving standards of die variety documentation. The variety shows close Class II distorted hub doubling on TRUST, the Y of LIBERTY, the star, and the date. Discovered by Ben Peters and cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 1963 WDDO-014 Proof, the renumbering from WDDO-034 occurred because the original WDDO-014 no longer met the threshold for listing, and the stronger variety was promoted to fill its slot. Obverse die markers include a die dot below the D of GOD and two short die gouges on the front portion of Jefferson's collar. The reverse of this coin is itself a doubled die, listed as 1963 Proof 5¢ WDDR-111, creating a dual doubled die variety with attributable doubling on both sides. This combination of obverse and reverse doubling from the same die pair significantly enhances collector interest. The 1963 proof nickel is among the most extensively studied dates for doubled dies in the Jefferson series.
