1963 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-007

Description

A nice spread toward the center on IN GOD WE TRUST characterizes this 1963 Proof Jefferson Nickel WDDO-007, with the doubling showing constant spread across all letters of the motto — meaning the separation between primary and secondary images remains uniform from the I through the T rather than varying in intensity along the inscription. Center-directed spread indicates the secondary hub impression shifted inward toward the die's center point, producing doubling that moves design elements toward the interior of the coin. The obverse carries three die markers for confirming the correct die pair: a short vertical die gouge northeast of the lower right of the E of WE, a short slanted die gouge under the G of GOD, and a short vertical die gouge between the centers of the I and B of LIBERTY. No reverse die markers were noted. As the seventh cataloged doubled die obverse for the 1963 proof nickel, this variety documents another instance of hub displacement in early 1960s San Francisco proof die production.
