Attributed by Jennifer Casazza and cross-referenced as Wexler 1963 WDDO-009 Proof, this proof Jefferson Nickel is designated a "Best Of" Nickel Doubled Die Variety — the highest distinction in the Brian A. Ribar nickel variety catalog. The obverse displays compound Class II + V Distorted and Pivoted Hub Doubling: a strong spread toward the center on LIBERTY, the star, and the date, combined with a counterclockwise spread from a pivot at approximately 4 o'clock on IN GOD WE TRUST. This dual-mechanism doubling — one component pushing inward and another rotating counterclockwise — creates a distinctive pattern where different areas of the obverse show doubling in different directions and magnitudes. Die markers include a die gouge (dot) between the Y of LIBERTY and the star, and a short vertical die gouge to the left of the lower portion of the I in LIBERTY on the obverse. The reverse shows a die gouge (dot) above the right end of the steps of Monticello. As a proof coin struck at the Philadelphia Mint, this 1963 nickel was produced on polished planchets with mirror-finish dies in copper-nickel composition — 75% copper, 25% nickel — at 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm diameter.
