1963 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-009

Description

Attributed by Jennifer Casazza and cross-referenced as Wexler 1963 WDDO-009 Proof, this proof Jefferson Nickel is designated a "Best Of" Nickel Doubled Die Variety — the highest distinction in the Brian A. Ribar nickel variety catalog. The obverse displays compound Class II + V Distorted and Pivoted Hub Doubling: a strong spread toward the center on LIBERTY, the star, and the date, combined with a counterclockwise spread from a pivot at approximately 4 o'clock on IN GOD WE TRUST. This dual-mechanism doubling — one component pushing inward and another rotating counterclockwise — creates a distinctive pattern where different areas of the obverse show doubling in different directions and magnitudes. Die markers include a die gouge (dot) between the Y of LIBERTY and the star, and a short vertical die gouge to the left of the lower portion of the I in LIBERTY on the obverse. The reverse shows a die gouge (dot) above the right end of the steps of Monticello. As a proof coin struck at the Philadelphia Mint, this 1963 nickel was produced on polished planchets with mirror-finish dies in copper-nickel composition — 75% copper, 25% nickel — at 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm diameter. The "Best Of" designation reflects the exceptional quality and visual impact of the compound doubling, which produces clearly separated primary and secondary images that are dramatic even on casual observation.
