1963 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-015
ErrorDescription
Class II distorted hub doubling on the 1963 Proof Jefferson Nickel WDDO-015 shows on IN GOD WE TRUST with a distinctive characteristic: the doubling decreases from left to right, indicating a rotational displacement where the pivot point is toward the right side of the die. The obverse carries a diagnostic die scratch on the rim above and between the N of IN and the G of GOD, while the reverse is listed as WDDR-120A — creating a dual-doubled die marriage. Class II rotational doubling produces variable displacement across the design, with greater separation on the side farthest from the rotation point and diminishing toward it. The decreasing left-to-right pattern means the IN shows the strongest doubling while TRUST shows progressively less. Proof Jefferson Nickels from the early 1960s were struck at Philadelphia with specially prepared dies, and dual-doubled marriages where both sides carry independent doubled die designations represent premium targets for variety specialists.
