1963-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-048
Error
Description
Distinguished by a clockwise spread on the R, U, and second T of IN GOD WE TRUST, the 1963-D Lincoln Memorial Cent WDDO-048 exhibits a rotational displacement pattern that places it among the more visually distinctive doubled die obverse varieties in the 1963-D series. A clockwise spread indicates that the working hub rotated slightly in one direction between impressions during die manufacture, creating a consistent directional shift across multiple design elements. The obverse also shows abrasion or die deterioration doubling to the right of the vest and left of the lower 1 in the date — a feature that should be carefully distinguished from the genuine hub doubling on the motto, as deterioration doubling does not carry the same numismatic significance. Reverse die markers include a light die scratch running southwest from the bottom of the second S in STATES to the top of the second U of PLURIBUS, and a die scratch running southwest from the bottom of the first U in PLURIBUS to the top of the second U in UNUM. Market values have been estimated at approximately two dollars in AU, three dollars in MS60, five dollars in MS63, and seven dollars in MS65. Cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 1963-D 1c WDDO-048 and attributed by the Wexler Team, this variety has no additional cross-references currently known. The Denver Mint's 1963 output of 1,774,020,400 cents ensured heavy die usage across hundreds of die pairs.
