Description

Among the more thoroughly documented varieties in the 1963-D DDO series, WDDO-046 of the Lincoln Memorial Cent displays an extra eyelid south of Lincoln's main eyelid together with doubling on the upper right side of the S and the second T in IN GOD WE TRUST. This broader spread across two adjacent motto letters — affecting both the S and the T — suggests a hub displacement that covered a somewhat wider zone than varieties where only a single letter shows doubling. Obverse die markers include a short, diagonal die gouge between the upper I and B of LIBERTY and a die gouge touching the center left side of the E in LIBERTY. The reverse provides additional attribution points: a small die gouge can be found to the left of the U in UNITED, a small die gouge touches the left side of the 3rd column near the center, and two small die gouges appearing as dots can be found almost touching the right side of the 1st column at one-third and one-half of the way from the bottom. Market values have been estimated at approximately two dollars in AU, three dollars in MS60, five dollars in MS63, and seven dollars in MS65. Cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 1963-D 1c WDDO-046 and attributed by the Wexler Team, this variety has no additional cross-references currently known. The 1963-D cent's mintage of 1,774,020,400 makes the base coin ubiquitous, but confirmed WDDO-046 specimens with clear doubling and matching die markers are genuinely scarce finds.
