Description

Assigned Wexler Variety ID 1963-D 1c WDDO-041 and attributed by the Wexler Team, this Doubled Die Obverse of the 1963-D Lincoln Memorial Cent occupies a position deep in the catalog that relatively few collectors have explored in depth. The higher-numbered varieties in any DDO series tend to receive less attention than the early entries — WDDO-001 through WDDO-005 are often the first that new variety collectors learn to identify — but the later discoveries can be equally rewarding from both a numismatic and a financial standpoint. WDDO-041 originated at the Denver Mint during the 1963 production year, when 1,774,020,400 cents were struck across hundreds of die pairs. The hubbing process that creates working dies involves pressing a hardened working hub into a softer die blank under enormous hydraulic pressure, and the design transfer typically requires multiple impressions. If the hub shifts even fractionally between impressions, the displaced secondary image becomes a permanent feature of the finished die. Because each working die is unique, the combination of doubled die features and die markers — scratches, gouges, chips, and cracks that accumulate during die use — creates a fingerprint that allows attribution specialists to catalog and distinguish individual varieties. No additional cross-references are currently known for WDDO-041. Collectors interested in this variety should examine candidates under at least 10x magnification, paying particular attention to the areas of the obverse where hub doubling most commonly manifests: the date, motto, and LIBERTY inscription.
