1963-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-035

Description

One of the more notable varieties in the 1963-D doubled die obverse series, WDDO-035 is distinguished both by its obverse doubling and by its pairing with a doubled die reverse. Doubling on the obverse shows on the second T of IN GOD WE TRUST and the numeral 3 in the date — two widely separated design elements whose simultaneous displacement indicates a substantial hub misalignment during die manufacture. Obverse die markers include a short horizontal die gouge southeast of the chin, a vertical die scratch to the right of the G of GOD, and a short die scratch behind the upper head well south of the N of IN. The reverse of this die pair is independently cataloged as a doubled die: the Wexler files list it as 1963-D 1c WDDR-004, making this coin a DDO/DDR combination — a particularly desirable configuration for variety collectors because it means both sides of the coin carry genuine hub doubling from separate die-production events. A reverse die scratch can be found right of the middle of the T of CENT. This variety was submitted by Brian Ribar and is cross-referenced as Coppercoins 1963D-1DO-014. It carries the Wexler Variety ID 1963-D 1c WDDO-035 and was attributed by the Wexler Team. The Denver Mint's 1963 production of 1,774,020,400 cents demanded enormous numbers of die pairs, and the coincidence of a doubled obverse die being paired with a doubled reverse die speaks to the frequency of hubbing anomalies across such a massive manufacturing operation.
