1963-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-034
Error
Description
Sharing its doubling profile with the closely related WDDO-033, the 1963-D Lincoln Memorial Cent WDDO-034 displays a small bar under the L in LIBERTY, an extra eyelid south of Lincoln's main eyelid, and possible very slight doubling to the right of the last T in IN GOD WE TRUST. Despite the similarity in doubled die characteristics, WDDO-034 is a distinct variety produced by a different working die, and it is the die markers — not the doubling pattern — that separate it from its neighbor. The obverse carries a minute die gouge appearing as a dot above the right side of the central loop of the 6 in the date, while the reverse exhibits a die scratch running almost horizontally from the lower D in UNITED and two parallel die scratches running east-northeast from the upper and lower right side of the Memorial base. When two DDO varieties share similar doubling features but originate from different dies, it often indicates that both dies were produced from the same working hub during the same hubbing session, inheriting a common misalignment that was then supplemented by each die's individual marker signature. Cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 1963-D 1c WDDO-034, this variety has no additional cross-references currently known. Attributed by the Wexler Team, it is part of the vast 1963-D cent production run of 1,774,020,400 coins at the Denver Mint. Collectors who locate a coin matching the doubling description should carefully compare both obverse and reverse die markers against published data to confirm whether they hold WDDO-033 or WDDO-034. Doubling shows as a small bar under L in LIBERTY and an extra eyelid to the southeast of the main eyelid.
