1963-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-030
Error
Description
Skipping one number in the sequence — WDDO-029 being assigned elsewhere in the Wexler catalog system — WDDO-030 of the 1963-D Lincoln Memorial Cent continues the remarkable procession of doubled die obverse varieties documented for this prolific Denver Mint issue. The Wexler Team attributed this variety under Wexler Variety ID 1963-D 1c WDDO-030, and no additional cross-references are currently known. Doubled die obverse varieties are created during die manufacture rather than during the striking process: when the working hub impresses the design into a working die blank, any misalignment between the hub and die during one of the multiple impressions required to complete the design transfer produces a secondary image that is permanently embedded in the die steel. The resulting doubling appears on every coin struck from that die, making each specimen a faithful reproduction of the same manufacturing anomaly. For the 1963-D cent, the Denver Mint's output of 1,774,020,400 pieces necessitated an extraordinary number of die pairs, and the statistical likelihood of hubbing errors rose proportionally. Collectors hunting for WDDO-030 should focus their examination on the areas where doubling is most commonly expressed on Lincoln cent obverses — the date numerals, the motto IN GOD WE TRUST, the word LIBERTY, and the fine details of Lincoln's portrait, particularly the eyelid and ear regions. A magnification of at least 7x is recommended for initial screening, with 10x to 20x preferred for confirming die markers.
