The Denver Mint struck 1,774,020,400 cents that year, requiring hundreds of working dies that were each produced through the hubbing process — a multi-step procedure in which a hardened master hub impresses its design into a softer die blank. When the hub and die are not perfectly aligned during one of these impressions, the resulting doubled image becomes a permanent feature of the die and every coin it produces.
