1963-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-026

Description

Situated in the middle range of the 1963-D doubled die obverse catalog, WDDO-026 is attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 1963-D 1c WDDO-026. Like many varieties in this extensive series, WDDO-026 resulted from a misalignment during the hubbing process at the Denver Mint, where the working hub and working die were fractionally out of register during one of the impressions required to fully sink the design into the die face. The resulting doubled image was permanently embedded in the die and transferred to every coin it struck during its service life. Collectors approaching the 1963-D DDO series for the first time may find the sheer number of cataloged varieties daunting, but the systematic approach to identification remains consistent across all of them: begin by examining the date numerals, the letters of IN GOD WE TRUST, and the word LIBERTY under at least 7x magnification, looking for any secondary image that appears as a distinct separation line rather than the flat, shelf-like spread characteristic of worthless machine doubling. The 1963-D cent's massive mintage of 1,774,020,400 coins means that examples are ubiquitous in pocket change, rolls, and dealer stocks, making it one of the most accessible dates for cherry-picking doubled die varieties. No additional cross-references are currently known. The coin was struck on a 95% copper and 5% zinc planchet at Denver, carrying Brenner's Lincoln portrait on the obverse and Gasparro's Memorial design on the reverse.
