1963-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-023
Error
Description
Closing out the currently documented Doubled Die Obverse sequence for the 1963-D Lincoln Memorial Cent at number twenty-three, WDDO-023 carries the Wexler Variety ID 1963-D 1c WDDO-023 and was attributed by the Wexler Team. The existence of twenty-three cataloged WDDO varieties for a single date and mintmark is a testament to both the Denver Mint's colossal 1963 production of 1,774,020,400 cents and the decades of dedicated attribution work by collectors and researchers who have systematically examined coins from that production run. Each variety represents a unique working die that received a misaligned impression during the hubbing process — a moment when the working hub and die blank were fractionally out of register — and the permanent record of that event was then transferred to every coin the die struck during its service life. Because the catalog may continue to grow as new discoveries are made, WDDO-023 should be understood as the current endpoint rather than a final boundary: additional working dies with detectable doubled images may yet be identified among the billions of 1963-D cents that were struck and dispersed into circulation more than six decades ago. No additional cross-references beyond the Wexler catalog are currently known. Collectors interested in building a comprehensive 1963-D DDO set face an engaging challenge — assembling confirmed examples of each variety requires patience, strong magnification equipment (7x minimum, 10x or greater preferred), and familiarity with the die marker profiles that distinguish one WDDO from another. The coin features Brenner's obverse and Gasparro's reverse on a 95% copper and 5% zinc planchet, the standard composition for Lincoln Memorial cents from 1962 through 1982.
