Description

The fifteenth documented Doubled Die Obverse for the 1963-D Lincoln Memorial Cent, WDDO-015 carries the Wexler Variety ID 1963-D 1c WDDO-015 and was attributed by the Wexler Team. Its place in the catalog reflects the remarkable density of doubled die discoveries from Denver's 1963 cent production, a program that struck 1,774,020,400 coins and consumed working dies at a pace that made hubbing anomalies a recurring byproduct of the manufacturing process. Every working die began as a softened steel blank that received multiple impressions from a hardened working hub under hydraulic pressure; if the die or hub shifted between any two of those impressions, the finished die carried a doubled image that it could not shed.
