1963-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-009

Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team under the Wexler Variety ID 1963-D 1c WDDO-009, this Doubled Die Obverse variety of the 1963-D Lincoln Memorial Cent displays doubling inside the numeral 3 on both the upper and lower inside loops, as well as on the right underside of the second T of TRUST within the motto IN GOD WE TRUST. The involvement of both the date and the motto suggests a hub displacement of sufficient magnitude to project visible doubling across a meaningful span of the die face. The variety is classified as Class VIII tilted hub doubling, consistent with the CONECA designation 10-O-VIII recorded in the cross-references field, and is also listed by Coppercoins as 1963D-1DO-023. Notably, the original attribution text also references CONECA 11-O-VIII and Coppercoins 1963D-1DO-015 within the body of the description — these appear to represent a second set of cross-reference data, possibly carried forward from an adjacent variety during early cataloging efforts, and both sets are preserved here for completeness and researcher reference. Submitted by Frank Baumann, WDDO-009 exemplifies the kind of dedicated collector attribution work that has built the 1963-D doubled die census into one of the most thoroughly documented in the Lincoln cent series. The Denver Mint's 1963 output of 1,774,020,400 cents consumed working dies at a rapid pace, and the Class VIII tilted hub mechanism — where one edge of the hub sits slightly higher than the opposite edge during a secondary impression — was among the more common doubling geometries to emerge from that volume of die production. Examination under at least 7x magnification is recommended, with particular attention to the inner contours of the 3 and the serif area of the second T in TRUST. Die Markers: Obverse: A short strong die scratch runs southwest from the hair at the back of the neck. Reverse: A die gouge can be found under the right leg of R in AMERICA. A short vertical die gouge can be found at the rim above the right side of T in UNITED.
