Description

Showing a D over D repunched to the northeast, this 1962-D Franklin Half Dollar RPM-002 displays a diagonal displacement direction that differs from both the bidirectional triple-punch of RPM-001 and the cardinal-direction repunchings seen on RPMs 003 and 004. The northeast correction means the initial D was positioned too far to the lower left, and the die maker adjusted the punch diagonally — upward and to the right — before striking the final impression. Remnants of the first D appear displaced to the southwest of the final position, where the initial impression's curves and vertical stroke create extra contour along the lower-left edge of the definitive D. Diagonal repunching directions like northeast produce asymmetric overlap patterns that differ from the horizontal displacement of east/west RPMs and the vertical displacement of north/south RPMs, making them visually distinctive. The 1962-D was the penultimate Denver Franklin Half Dollar, and its four cataloged RPMs spanning from triple-punched to single northeast, east, and south displacements demonstrate the full spectrum of mintmark placement variability. Struck in 90% silver at 30.6mm. Look for the displaced first D impression to the southwest of the final position — the diagonal overlap that distinguishes this northeast RPM from the date's three other varieties.
