1962 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-001
Error
Description
Medium spread around the full rim inscription — strongest on QUARTER DOLLAR — combined with a split right stem on the olive branch characterizes this 1962 Washington Quarter as DDR-001 in the VarietyVista catalog with die markers UVC-1010 and DMR-010. The split right stem is the most unambiguous diagnostic: the primary and secondary impressions diverge enough to be visible without extreme magnification on uncirculated examples. Three die stages are documented. Stage A is early die state. Stage B brings the reverse to mid-die state while a die crack develops across the bust on the obverse, placing it at late-mid die state. Stage C advances both sides to late die state. The 1962 Philadelphia quarter was struck in 90% silver and carries no mintmark, leaving the reverse doubling and split stem as the primary attribution tools. Collectors should examine QUARTER DOLLAR first — where displacement reaches its maximum — then confirm with the split stem and any applicable stage markers.
