1962 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-053

Description

Documented by Brian A. Ribar and cataloged as WDDO-053, this 1962 Proof Jefferson Nickel carries a Class II Distorted Hub Doubling that shows on IN GOD WE TRUST. This variety has an administrative history important for accurate attribution: it was formerly listed as WDDO-058, then renumbered to fill the WDDO-053 slot after the original WDDO-053 was delisted for being too minor to reliably attribute. Class II doubling results from a distortion in the hub itself, producing a spreading or thickening on affected letters that differs in character from Class I rotation. Obverse die markers are not noted for this entry; the reverse shows a slanted die scratch above the small center semicircular window of Monticello. Proof Jefferson Nickels of 1962 were struck at Philadelphia from specially prepared mirror-finish dies and planchets, making subtle doubled die characteristics more perceptible on the reflective surfaces.
