1962 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-050
ErrorDescription
Fiftieth cataloged doubled die obverse for the 1962 proof Jefferson Nickel, this variety exhibits Class II Distorted Hub Doubling on IN GOD WE TRUST. Distorted hub doubling occurs when the working hub deforms slightly between impressions during die manufacture, producing extra thickness on affected design elements rather than the clean separation seen in rotational classes. Die markers include a die dot positioned between the back of Jefferson's collar and his queue on the obverse, and a die dot inside the upper portion of the S of PLURIBUS on the reverse — both providing reliable fixed diagnostics for attribution regardless of die state progression. Discovered by Brian A. Ribar. Wexler Variety ID: 1962 WDDO-050 Proof. The extraordinary depth of the 1962 proof Jefferson Nickel DDO catalog — reaching at least fifty entries — reflects both the intensity of collector scrutiny applied to this date and the number of working dies employed in proof production. Philadelphia Mint proof strikes on 75% copper, 25% nickel composition. Each proof die received fewer total impressions than business-strike dies, limiting the population of any individual variety.
