Description

Selected for the "Best Of" Nickel Doubled Die Varieties designation, this 1962 Proof Jefferson Nickel WDDO-040 combines Class II (Distorted Hub Doubling) and Class VI (Distended Hub Doubling) in a single die — an uncommon pairing. Strong Class II doubling is visible on IN GOD WE TRUST, while strong Class VI extra thickness manifests on LIBERTY, decreasing in intensity from left to right across the word. This variety was formerly listed as WDDO-063; it was renumbered to WDDO-040 when the original WDDO-040 was delisted for being too minor, with this entry taking its place in the catalog sequence. Attributed by Brian A. Ribar. The reverse carries a light die scratch extending from the upper right side of the large semicircular window — a useful attribution marker. Cross-referenced to Wexler: 1962 WDDO-040 Proof.
