Description

Attributed by John Conway, this 1962 proof Jefferson nickel doubled die obverse carries a designation history worth noting: it was formerly listed as WDDO-066 before being reassigned to replace the original WDDO-034 listing, which was delisted for being too minor to warrant catalog inclusion. The current WDDO-034 is classified as Class II, Distorted Hub Doubling, with close but discernible doubling visible on the motto IN GOD WE TRUST. Class II doubling occurs when the hub itself is slightly distorted between impressions during die manufacture, producing a characteristic spreading pattern that differs from the rotational displacement of Class I or the design element shift of Class III varieties. Two slanted die scratches above Jefferson's eye on the obverse serve as the primary authentication markers, while the reverse carries no noted die markers.
