1962 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-026

Description

Class II Distorted Hub Doubling creates a strong spread toward the center on LIBERTY, the star, and the date on this 1962 Proof Jefferson Nickel, with the spread decreasing from left to right. A closer but still measurable spread appears on IN GOD WE TRUST. Class II doubling indicates a rotational displacement of the hub during the impression cycle, and the decreasing left-to-right pattern reveals the axis of rotation relative to the die center. Obverse die markers include a slanted die gouge above the head at approximately 11:30 on the clock, positioned below the rim. Reverse markers: a vertical die gouge between the T and E of UNITED and a die gouge appearing as a dot to the lower right of the Monticello building. Cross-referenced under the Wexler system as 1962 WDDO-026 Proof. John A. Wexler himself attributed this variety. The 1962 proof set mintage was approximately 3.22 million, and twenty-six DDOs from this proof production reflects extensive variety research on early-1960s Jefferson proof dies. The star element on Felix Schlag's obverse provides a distinctive reference point for measuring hub displacement.
