Description

Attributed by John A. Wexler, the 1962 Proof Jefferson Nickel WDDO-016 presents Class II distorted hub doubling with a spread toward the center on IN GOD WE TRUST. The proof striking format accentuates the doubling, making the centripetal shift on the motto letters readily apparent under moderate magnification. Obverse die markers include intersecting die scratches near the bottom of the queue and a series of vertical die gouges and scratches on the queue just above the ribbon. The reverse carries its own diagnostics: a short, nearly horizontal die gouge under the O of OF, and a series of slanted die scratches near the rim between the F of OF and the M of AMERICA. The concentration of doubling on the IN GOD WE TRUST motto, while leaving other obverse elements largely unaffected, reflects the localized nature of distorted hub doubling and provides a focused area for collectors to examine when cherry-picking proof sets from this date.
