1962 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-011

Description

Attributed by John A. Wexler, WDDO-011 of the 1962 Proof Jefferson nickel features Class II distorted hub doubling. A nice spread toward the center is visible on LIBERTY, the star, and the date, while a very close spread shows on TRUST. The stronger displacement on LIBERTY and the date compared to the subtle shift on TRUST illustrates the variable intensity characteristic of distorted hub doubling across different areas of the die face. Obverse die markers include a short, almost vertical die gouge between the lower part of the coat and IN, plus a die gouge between and below the I and B of LIBERTY. On the reverse, a die gouge appears between the upper portions of the S of PLURIBUS and the U of UNUM. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 1962 WDDO-011 Proof, this variety represents one of several doubled die obverses documented among the early-1960s proof Jefferson nickel issues from the Philadelphia Mint.
