Description

Carrying a revised catalog history, the 1962 Jefferson Nickel WDDO-028 was formerly listed as WDDO-069 and was renumbered to replace the original WDDO-028 listing, which was delisted for being too minor. Attributed by Brian A. Ribar, the current WDDO-028 exhibits Class II Distorted Hub Doubling on LIBERTY, the star, and the date. This mechanism warps the hub surface in a non-uniform fashion, producing displacement that varies in direction and magnitude across different parts of the design. A die scratch to the lower right of the Y of LIBERTY identifies the obverse die, while a slanted die scratch to the lower right of the T of CENTS marks the reverse. The relisting history is instructive: when the original WDDO-028 proved insufficiently distinctive to merit a catalog entry, the stronger former WDDO-069 was promoted to take its number, maintaining catalog continuity while ensuring that listed varieties meet a minimum threshold of collectibility. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 1962 WDDO-028, this regular strike variety rewards careful inspection of all three affected design elements.
