Description

Formerly cataloged as WDDO-072, this Jefferson Nickel variety was reassigned to the WDDO-010 designation after the original WDDO-010 listing was delisted for being too minor. The replacement is far from minor—very nice Class II distorted hub doubling is clearly visible on LIBERTY, the star, and the date. Obverse die markers include a slanted die scratch below Jefferson's chin and two die scratches between the upper portions of the 1 and 9 of the date. On the reverse, a die gouge appears to the upper right of the second O of MONTICELLO. The Class II mechanism, produced when the hub is tilted or shifted between impressions, creates a characteristic directional spread that distinguishes it from the extra thickness of Class VI varieties. This renumbering history is worth noting for collectors referencing older attribution guides, as coins previously certified or labeled as WDDO-072 correspond to this same die marriage.
