1962 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-010
Error
Description
Medium spread affects LIBERTY, the five-pointed star, and the date, with lighter spread visible on TRUST, on this 1962 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel. VarietyVista catalogs this as DDO-010 with die markers UVC-1122 and DMR-053. Die stage documentation shows Stage A in Early Die State unconfirmed, Stage B with both obverse and reverse in Mid Die State, and Stage C in Late Die State unconfirmed — meaning the positively verified specimens come from the middle portion of the die's productive life. The 1962 Jefferson Nickel was produced during the post-war era's peak of circulating coinage demand, and Philadelphia's output of five-cent pieces was substantial as the nation's economy expanded through the early 1960s. Felix Schlag's original 1938 design — which won a national design competition and featured a left-facing portrait of Jefferson on the obverse with Monticello on the reverse — was by 1962 in its twenty-fourth year of continuous production. The medium spread on LIBERTY and the date places DDO-010 in the category of varieties that experienced enough hub displacement to be detectable under moderate magnification (10x-20x), while the lighter spread on TRUST indicates the hub shift was centered in a location that affected the left and lower obverse elements more strongly than the upper right inscription. The high DMR number of 053 indicates this die was married to the fifty-third documented reverse die for its variety classification sequence.
