1962 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-046

Description

Forty-sixth in the Wexler catalog of doubled die obverses for the 1962 Proof Jefferson Nickel, WDDO-046 exhibits Class II (Distorted Hub) doubling with a close constant spread toward the center on IN GOD WE TRUST. This designation means the displacement maintains uniform magnitude across the inscription, with the secondary image shifted inward — consistent with hub distortion that contracted the design slightly during hubbing. Proof Jefferson Nickels of 1962 were among the final issues struck at Philadelphia before proof production moved to San Francisco in 1968, and the extensive DDO census for this date reflects both the large proof mintage and thorough collector examination. Reverse die markers provide secondary attribution: a small die dot sits right of the large semicircular center window of Monticello, a die gouge appears below E and P of E PLURIBUS, and a slanted die gouge runs below the N of CENTS. The semicircular center window — a distinctive Monticello architectural element — serves as a reliable landmark for locating the die dot. Proof striking renders the close Class II spread with exceptional clarity against mirror fields.
