Description

Reclassified from its former listing as WDDO-065, this 1962 Proof Jefferson Nickel WDDO-035 replaced the original entry which was delisted as too minor. The current variety exhibits Class II (Distorted Hub) doubling, where slight distortion during hubbing creates a tight secondary impression distinct from the rotational spread of Class I varieties. Nice Class II doubling shows on IN GOD WE TRUST, producing visible secondary lettering across the full motto. As a proof coin struck on specially prepared planchets with polished dies, the mirrored surfaces enhance visibility of even subtle hub displacement. Die markers assist attribution: die scratches appear on Jefferson's shoulder on the obverse, while the reverse is listed as WWHR-001 (Doubled Working Hub Reverse), meaning this obverse die was paired with a hub-level reverse anomaly. The WWHR-001 pairing indicates the reverse doubling originated at the hub rather than the die, so multiple dies could share the same reverse variety. Collectors examining 1962 proof sets should check both the motto on the obverse and the reverse for this doubled die and hub pairing.

Die Markers

  • Obverse: Die scratches on Jefferson's shoulder.
  • Reverse: Listed as WWHR-001.
