1962 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-002

Description

One half of a dual doubled die pairing, DDO-002 on the 1962 Philadelphia Jefferson Nickel presents medium spread on IN GOD WE TRUST, with the reverse of this same working die independently cataloged as DDR-007. Die markers UVC-1073 and DMR-004 confirm this working die. A dual doubled die — where both the obverse and reverse of a single coin carry hub doubling from separate misalignment events — is uncommon and represents a coin that received flawed hub impressions during the manufacture of both sides of the working die. For variety collectors, the DDO-002/DDR-007 pairing means a single specimen can satisfy two catalog entries simultaneously, making it more desirable than a coin carrying doubling on only one side. Medium spread on IN GOD WE TRUST indicates clearly discernible secondary letter images at moderate magnification, particularly on the vertical strokes of the motto's taller letters. Felix Schlag's obverse positions IN GOD WE TRUST in relatively small lettering to the left of Jefferson's portrait, where the hub displacement produced its visible effect. The 1962 nickel was struck in standard copper-nickel composition (75% copper, 25% nickel) at the Philadelphia Mint.
