1962-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-005
Error
Description
Presenting the most precisely localized doubling in the 1962-D Lincoln Memorial Cent DDO sequence, WDDO-005 shows slight doubling below the horizontal bar of the L in LIBERTY — a single-letter diagnostic that demands careful magnification to resolve but rewards patient examination with a cleanly defined secondary image on one of the obverse's most prominent inscription elements. Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1962-D 1¢ WDDO-005, this variety carries extensive die markers on both faces. On the obverse, a die gouge sits between the O and D in GOD, and a die scratch runs from north-northwest to south-southeast between the upper Y in LIBERTY and Lincoln's shoulder. The reverse is even more heavily marked: a die scratch runs southeast from the bottom right of the first U in PLURIBUS through the top right of the second U in UNUM to the upper left of the M in UNUM; another runs south-southwest from the bottom right of the U in UNITED to the first Memorial column; and a third runs southwest from the bottom right of the N in UNITED to the upper first column. This dense network of reverse die scratches, concentrated in the upper inscription and colonnade area, provides a multi-point confirmation system that allows collectors to identify the specific die pair with confidence before searching for the subtle L-bar doubling.
