1961-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-033
Error
Description
Cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-809 with die marriage record DMR-046, RPM-033 on the 1961-D Lincoln Memorial Cent is a repunched mintmark variety whose four die stages document an extensive concentration of reverse die failures. Stage A presents an asymmetric die condition: the obverse is in Early Die State (EDS) while the reverse has already reached Mid Die State (MDS), suggesting the obverse die was installed as a fresh replacement into a press running a reverse die that had accumulated prior wear. Stage B advances the obverse to MDS and introduces a cascade of reverse damage: a die chip on the right cornice at LDS, a die break on column 12, a die chip on column 1, a die crack on the C of CENT, a die break on the lower O of ONE, a die break at the upper left base, a die chip at the left base tip, and a die break on the lower left baseline. This eight-item inventory of reverse anomalies at a single die stage represents one of the highest concentrations of simultaneous reverse damage documented among the 1961-D RPM varieties. By Stage C, a die break has appeared between the 6 and 1 of the date on the obverse at MDS, while the reverse has continued to LDS. The terminal Stage D carries an unconfirmed LDS classification. The extreme reverse deterioration at Stage B — spanning columns, lettering, cornice, and base elements — paints a portrait of a reverse die near the end of its operational tolerance.
