1960 Proof Jefferson Nickel - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-028

Description

Combining two distinct classes of hub doubling, this 1960 proof Jefferson Nickel displays Class II (Distorted Hub) and Class V (Pivoted Hub) spread on IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, the star, and the date. The dual-class combination means the hub exhibited both internal distortion and a rotational pivot during impression, producing a spread pattern more complex than either class alone would generate. Die markers include a die dot in Jefferson's hair just to the upper right of the forehead and a second die dot on the lower right portion of the shoulder. No significant reverse markers have been noted. The WDDO-028 designation identifies this as the twenty-eighth cataloged doubled die obverse for 1960 Jefferson Nickels, reflecting the depth of variety research on proof issues from this era. Proof nickels from 1960 were struck at Philadelphia during robust proof set production, and the careful striking process paradoxically preserved hub doubling evidence with greater fidelity than business strikes. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID: 1960 WDDO-028 Proof, with attribution by William Hostutler. The star and date provide the clearest areas for initial examination.
