Description

The 1960 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-026 is a Class V Pivoted Hub Doubling variety on the proof Jefferson Nickel. Class V doubling occurs when the hub pivots around a fixed point during die sinking, producing spread that radiates outward — elements near the pivot show minimal displacement while those farther away exhibit greater separation. On this die, the pivoted hub doubling manifests on LIBERTY, the star, and the date, positioned in the left obverse field where rotational displacement concentrated. As a proof issue struck with specially prepared dies on polished planchets at Philadelphia, the mirror-like fields make doubled outlines sharper and more visible than on a business strike with similar doubling. The pristine surfaces of proof coins preserve hub doubling detail with exceptional clarity, making proof doubled dies particularly prized by variety collectors. Obverse die markers include slanted die scratches on Jefferson's collar, while the reverse shows die scratches above and to the right of the small right window and a short die scratch above the long left window of Monticello.
