1960 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-015

Description

Bearing the attribution of Gary G. Wagnon, the 1960 WDDO-015 is a Class II distorted hub doubled die obverse on the proof Jefferson nickel, showing a nice constant spread toward the center on LIBERTY, the star, the date, and IN GOD WE TRUST. Class II doubling produces a convergent spread where design elements appear to shift inward, and the consistent nature of the spread across multiple elements indicates uniform hub distortion rather than a localized anomaly. The obverse carries two die gouges as pickup points: one appearing as a dot on the forehead north of the eye, and another dot on the chin. On the reverse, a die gouge dot sits above the R of AMERICA, and a vertical die gouge appears to the upper right of the E in E PLURIBUS UNUM. Cataloged under the Wexler designation 1960 WDDO-015 Proof, this variety was struck at the Philadelphia Mint, which produced all proof coinage until operations transferred to San Francisco in 1968. The proof striking process, with its multiple impressions on polished planchets, can accentuate hub doubling visibility by providing crisper design definition against which the spread becomes more discernible.
