1960 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-005
Error
Description
The only doubled die reverse variety cataloged on the 1960 proof coinage in this batch, WDDR-005 on the Lincoln Memorial Cent Proof Small Date shows a close spread towards the center on ONE CENT, USA, and the designer's initials. The centerward spread indicates a Class II rotational misalignment during the hubbing process, where the secondary hub impression was displaced slightly inward relative to the primary. No significant obverse die markers have been noted, meaning attribution relies primarily on the reverse diagnostics. The reverse die carries a short vertical die gouge to the left of the upper second A in AMERICA, two diagonal die scratches on the right base of the Memorial, a nearly horizontal die scratch near the top of the 6th Memorial bay, a short diagonal die gouge near the top of the 3rd bay, and a small die gouge between the centers of the E and N in CENT. Because this variety was struck on proof dies at the Philadelphia Mint, the total population is constrained to the approximately 3,000 impressions typical of a single proof die's service life. Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1960 1¢ Pr WDDR-005 with no other known cross-references, this proof DDR variety combines the collectibility of a doubled die with the premium finish and limited production inherent to proof coinage.
