Description

Designated as a Doubled Working Hub Obverse by the Wexler Team, the 1960-D Jefferson Nickel WWHO-001 documents hub-level doubling — a mechanically significant distinction from ordinary die-level doubled dies. The spread toward the rim appears on the lower portion of the letters in IN GOD WE TRUST, and the coin is further identified as the Small Date variety. Hub-level doubling occurs when the master hub impresses the working hub with a slight misalignment, meaning the doubled image is built into the hub itself. Every working die subsequently produced from that hub inherits the same doubling, which is why WWHO varieties can appear on coins with varying die-specific markers — cracks, polish lines, and surface features differ from die to die, but the fundamental hub doubling remains constant. This characteristic distinguishes hub doubling from die doubling, where only a single working die is affected. The 1960-D was struck at Denver on 75% copper, 25% nickel planchets at 21.2mm.
