1959 Proof Washington Quarter - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002

Description

1959 WDDO-002 is a doubled die obverse on the 1959 proof Washington quarter, cataloged by the Wexler team. A strong spread toward the center, together with extra thickness, appears on the queue, the ribbon, the hair on the rear of the head, LIBERTY, the date and the designer's initials, with a slighter spread on IN GOD WE TRUST. On the obverse, a curling line in the hair on top of the head looks like a struck-through-string error, but Wexler notes that the line is raised, showing that it was in the die. On the reverse, under the M of UNUM there is a small gouge (dot). Tony Russo submitted the variety. Wexler lists no cross-references. Wexler includes it in its "Best Of" varieties.
