1959 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-017

Description

Attributed by Brian A. Ribar, the 1959 Proof Jefferson Nickel WDDR-017 is a Class II Distorted Hub Doubling variety. The doubling shows on E PLURIBUS UNUM and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, with the spread decreasing slightly from left to right across both legends. Doubling also shows on FIVE CENTS and on the M of MONTICELLO. The Wexler Variety ID is 1959 WDDR-017 Proof. As a Proof issue, the highly polished fields of the 1959 Proof Jefferson Nickel allow the doubling to be examined with greater resolution than on circulation-strike examples, and the sharp strike typical of Proof dies tends to define the doubled elements more crisply. Die markers on this variety are documented on both sides of the coin. On the obverse, a small die dot is present at the top of Jefferson's forehead. On the reverse, a die scratch is present on the frame of the small left window of Monticello. A second die scratch appears to the upper left of the small left window. A die gouge is located below the CA of AMERICA. The forehead die dot is the most accessible obverse marker and serves as a rapid confirmation point before the reverse doubling is examined.
