1959 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-006
ErrorDescription
Another proof entry from the 1959 Jefferson nickel series, WDDR-006 displays Class II (Distorted Hub Doubling) with a close spread on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. While the doubling is concentrated on the national legend rather than the motto, the proof finish ensures even this close spread is discernible to attentive collectors. An almost vertical die scratch on Jefferson's shoulder marks the obverse, and the reverse presents a die gouge to the left of the lower portion of the second column along with a die gouge below the first T of STATES. The column-area gouge is especially useful for attribution, as it sits near the architectural detail of Monticello where collectors are already examining the building for signs of doubling. Proof doubled die reverses from this era remain underappreciated relative to their business strike counterparts.
