1959 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-014
Error
Description
From the inaugural year of Gasparro's Lincoln Memorial reverse, this doubled die reverse documents a hub misalignment that produced visible doubling on a 1959 Philadelphia cent. Die hubbing misalignment — where the hub is not perfectly centered or angled during impression — is the mechanism behind all doubled die varieties, and on the 1959 cent it created detectable doubling on the brand-new Memorial design. Obverse markers: die scratch SE from left side of B in LIBERTY, die gouge right of top of bowtie, numerous other die scratches throughout. Reverse markers: parallel die scratches SE from bottom of 2nd S in STATES, numerous other die scratches throughout. The 1959 cent represents one of the most significant design transitions in the Lincoln series — only the second reverse change in fifty years. Fourteen doubled die reverses cataloged for the 1959 Philadelphia cent reflects the scrutiny applied to this transitional date by researchers.
