1959 Lincoln Memorial Cent - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002

Description

1959 WDDO-002 is a doubled die obverse on the 1959 Lincoln Memorial cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. The doubling is a Class II spread toward the rim on the letters of LIBERTY, and the straight-edged letters of IN GOD WE TRUST show notched corners. Obverse, Stage A: a scratch runs ENE to the shoulder, starting at the top of LIBERTY's Y; several WNW to ESE scratches lie between the tops of the G and O in GOD; and a crack crosses the bust's left base, over the designer's initials. Stage B: a short scratch leads NW off the top of the shoulder, another curves SE off the bowtie's bottom, and a NW to SE scratch cuts through the 2nd 9 on its left side. Stage C: the Stage B scratches at the shoulder and bowtie have been abraded away, but the one through the 2nd 9 remains. Reverse, Stage A: a small gouge lies in CENT, between the middles of the N and T; a horizontal scratch connects the tops of the O and N in ONE; and several scratches go SW from the bottom of the Memorial under the right post. Stage B matches Stage A. Stage C: a strong SSE scratch starts at the top of the right cornice, and two strong ENE scratches come off the lower right of the 2nd A in AMERICA. John A. Wexler submitted the variety. CONECA lists it as 2-O-II and Crawford as CDDO-002; its Cherrypickers number is FS-01-1959-102 (022.3) and its Coppercoins number 1959P-1DO-002. Wexler's comments explain that CONECA once listed this variety as 1959 1¢ 4-O-II, that it was originally reported by Delma K. Romines, and that it appeared under that number in the 1994 CONECA U.S. Doubled Die Master Listing. CONECA has since revamped its doubled die files and now lists it as 2-O-II, so Wexler advises careful examination of any 1959 cent doubled die carrying the 4-O-II attribution, since it is most likely this variety. Wexler includes it in its "Best Of" varieties.
