1959 Lincoln Memorial Cent - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001

Description

1959 WDDO-001 is a doubled die obverse on the 1959 Lincoln Memorial cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. The doubling is a Class II spread toward the rim, seen on the date: the 59 shows separation lines and the 19 looks thicker. Wexler notes that the letters of LIBERTY are doubled as well on early die state pieces. Obverse, Stage A: numerous WNW to ESE scratches run both in front of and behind the bust, and one scratch joins the lower parts of the T and Y in LIBERTY. Stage B: the scratches are weaker. Stage C: most are very weak or missing. In Stage D most of them are extremely weak or gone, and there is a short, strong horizontal scratch above the B of LIBERTY, with a small gouge below the I. Reverse, Stage A: inside the upper N of ONE a scratch runs SSE to NNW; numerous scratches go NNW from the top right of the Memorial; a SSW to NNE scratch sits at the far right of the right Memorial base; and numerous NNW to SSE scratches lie above the statue of Lincoln. Stage B: the die has been heavily abraded. The scratches above the statue and at the Memorial's upper right are gone, and the ones on the right base and inside the N of ONE remain but are weaker. A small gouge appears below the E in AMERICA, and another gouge lies ENE of the designer's initials, close to the rim; Wexler notes that both of these gouges first show up on Stage B pieces. Stage C: the remaining scratches are very weak. Stage D is a very late die state: a strong gouge at the bottom of the 12th column, on its left side, strong gouges below the left end of the Memorial, and a gouge halfway from the 12th column to AMERICA's 2nd A. John A. Wexler submitted the variety. CONECA lists it as 1-O-II and Crawford as CDDO-001. Its Cherrypickers number is FS-01-1959-101 (022.2), and its Coppercoins number is 1959P-1DO-001. Wexler includes it in its "Best Of" varieties.
