Description
Notable for its dramatic die deterioration, WDDO-006 is a 1959-D Lincoln cent with a doubled eyelid just below the normal one, cataloged by the Wexler Team. The obverse tells a story of progressive die failure: parallel die scratches run east to west to the right of the top of the ear, a die crack runs east-northeast from the top of the ear through the upper forehead, and a large die chip appears in the hair on the upper back of the head. This constellation of damage points to a die that saw extended service, potentially limiting the surviving population. The reverse carries no significant die markers, placing the full burden of attribution on the obverse diagnostics. The large die chip in particular gives WDDO-006 a distinctive "look" that experienced cherry-pickers can spot even before confirming the doubled eyelid under magnification.
