1959-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-005

Description

Documented by the Wexler Team as WDDO-005, this 1959-D Lincoln cent carries the familiar doubled eyelid found just below the normal eyelid—part of the well-known cluster of eyelid varieties from Denver's first Memorial cent year. The obverse die marker is a die scratch running southeast from the front of the normal eyelid, which conveniently sits near the very feature collectors are examining for the doubling itself. On the reverse, a die gouge to the right of the lower second A in AMERICA provides the confirming attribution point. The relative simplicity of the die marker set—one obverse, one reverse—makes WDDO-005 quick to verify once a collector has located the doubled eyelid. Among the 1959-D eyelid varieties, each is separated by its unique die fingerprint rather than differences in the doubling itself.
