1957 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-004
ErrorDescription
A proof-only Jefferson Nickel variety, the 1957 WDDO-004 exhibits Class II Distorted Hub Doubling visible on LIBERTY, the star, and the date. The distorted hub mechanism produces doubling that manifests as extra thickness rather than a clean separated image, created when the working hub deforms slightly between impressions during die production. Very strong doubling distinguishes this entry from subtler Class II varieties on proof Jefferson Nickels of the era. Die markers for attribution include a die scratch above RT of LIBERTY on the obverse and die gouges below ST and the second T of STATES on the reverse — fixed diagnostics that confirm the specific die pair regardless of strike quality. Discovered by John A. Wexler. Wexler Variety ID: 1957 WDDO-004 Proof. Philadelphia Mint proof production in 1957 served collectors through annually issued proof sets, and doubled die varieties on proof coins carry additional significance because proof dies receive fewer total strikes than business-strike dies, meaning fewer specimens exist for any given die anomaly.
