1957 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001
Error
Description
Primary doubled die reverse for the 1957 Jefferson Nickel, WDDR-001 exhibits Class II distorted hub doubling with a constant spread toward the center on E PLURIBUS UNUM, a close spread on OF AMERICA that increases from left to right, and slight doubling on the second O of MONTICELLO and the lower right side of the building. Extensive die marker documentation across two stages supports attribution: Stage A shows a short vertical die gouge between R and T of LIBERTY, a die scratch near the rim above WE, and a die scratch from the rim over E of WE to the first T of TRUST on the obverse, while the reverse carries a short slanted die scratch below D of UNITED and a small die dent right of the lower second column. Stage B shows all Stage A markers polished away, replaced by new markers including a short vertical die gouge right of the upper second T of TRUST and a die gouge dot between the upper 1 and 9 of the date on the obverse, with reverse markers including die gouge dots in the field near R of PLURIBUS, left of E of E PLURIBUS, and inside the lower left O of OF. The Stage B doubling is the same pattern as Stage A but appears weaker due to die polishing — a common progression as Mint personnel dress the die surface during service.
