1957 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-003
ErrorDescription
Struck as a proof at the Philadelphia Mint, this 1957 Jefferson Nickel WDDO-003 exhibits Class II (Distorted Hub) doubling — a mechanism where slight flexion in the hub during the die-making process produces a tight but detectable secondary impression. Very close Class II doubling shows on LIBERTY, the star, and the date, affecting three spatially separated obverse elements that collectively confirm the hub distortion extended across much of the die face. The mirrored fields and sharp detail characteristic of proof coinage enhance the visibility of even the closest Class II spread, as the reflective surfaces accentuate any disruption in the design edges. Obverse die markers include light die scratches in Jefferson's hair to the right of his temple. On the reverse, a die scratch appears to the right of the long right window on Monticello, providing a secondary confirmation point on the building facade. Attributed by John A. Wexler and cross-referenced under the designation 1957 WDDO-003 Proof, this variety demonstrates how the proof striking process can make otherwise subtle Class II distortion accessible to collectors. Examination should focus on the edges of LIBERTY, the star points, and the date numerals where the very close secondary impressions manifest.
