1956 Proof Jefferson Nickel - Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-021

Description

Twenty-one documented doubled die reverses for the 1956 proof Jefferson Nickel demonstrates the depth of variety research on proof issues from this era. WDDR-021 exhibits very close Class II distorted hub doubling on UNUM, where the tight spread requires magnification to resolve the secondary impression from the primary strike. Attributed by John A. Wexler under Wexler Variety ID 1956 WDDR-021 Proof, the die carries a dual-attribution connection: the obverse is independently cataloged as WDDO-005, meaning collectors examining this die pair find doubled die features on both sides — a scarce convergence elevating the variety's significance. Die markers include a circular die gouge above the left arch on the reverse and a curving die scratch to the left of the long left window on Monticello, both tied to architectural elements of Schlag's design. The dual-attribution status — WDDR-021 reverse paired with WDDO-005 obverse — creates one of the more desirable combinations from 1956 proof production. Proof strikes ensure maximum preservation of both the subtle reverse doubling on UNUM and the companion obverse doubling, making these coins ideal for die variety study.
