Description

DDR-016 on the 1956 Proof Jefferson Nickel exhibits a medium spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, with tripling on the outer serifs of AMERICA — the hallmark I-2 feature of this die. Die markers are UVC-933 and DMR-020. Stage A, early die state, carries a die gouge inside the rim directly below the first A of AMERICA, along with two die gouges inside and outside the upper loop of the B in PLURIBUS. The doubling class is IV Offset Hub Doubling. VarietyVista cross-reference: DDR-016. Proof Jefferson Nickels of this era were struck at Philadelphia on polished planchets with mirror-finish dies, producing cameo contrast that makes the AMERICA serif tripling particularly legible under magnification. The reverse tripling combined with the die-gouge cluster in PLURIBUS gives this variety a strong two-sided diagnostic profile allowing confident attribution even in circulated specimens. A well-documented Proof doubled die reverse in the Jefferson Nickel series.
